The State of Florida removed a rainbow painted crosswalk that honored 49 people who died in the Pulse nightclub shooting. It did so in the middle of the night. NBC News reported Florida Governor Ron DeSantis' response:
"We will not allow our state roads to be commandeered for political purposes."
Who commandeered that crosswalk in 2017?  The State of Florida.
Politics is an insufficient way to explain our world, given its ever shifting sands, serial mistruths and mind numbing double standards.  Governor Ron DeSantis' comment should be viewed in that context.
I hope the 27 Camp Mystic girls who died in the tragic July 4th flash floods don't want to be honored with a "political" rainbow.  Surely. Texas Governor Greg Abbott can come up with an appropriate football image on behalf of those young girls.
There are good reasons the majority of the country wants nothing to do with either political party.  Most of us have lives to live, money to earn and believe U.S. values enshrined in the Constitution are for everybody.
When people gunned down can't be remembered in a way that honors them, then we are in a sorry state.  Politics sucks.
Update 9-10-25:  Jesse wrote:
I find it almost amazing how boldly Trump's cabinet members lie to the people. Yes, all politicians lie, but generally it is the exception and not the rule. And there is always an element of 'shame' to it.Not anymore. Lying is now a duty to the Commander, even when it doesn't matter, or is counter-productive.And the manner in which the mask has fallen away from the madness of governments is stunning, even more so for the lengths to which some will bend their minds and hearts to excuse obvious sadism, dishonesty, injustice, and murder.
Update 10-11-25: Texas Governor Greg Abbott ordered a rainbow painted crosswalk be removed or the City of Houston could lose state funding.
“Today, I directed the Texas Department of Transportation to ensure Texas counties and cities remove any and all political ideologies from our streets. To keep Texans moving safely and free from distraction, we must maintain a safe and consistent transportation network across Texas. Any city that refuses to comply with the federal road standards will face consequences including the withholding or denial of state and federal road funding and suspension of agreements with TxDOT,” said Governor Greg Abbott. This follows Angelo State University and parent Texas Tech's forbidding discussion of "gender ideologies" by faculty on their campuses. Abbott banned that with his state directive which also mentioned "radical sexual orientation." Gay professors can see where this is going. They may soon be resurfaced and painted over.
Update 10-12-25:  The Guardian reported:
A prominent anti-DEI campaigner appointed by Meta in August as an adviser on AI bias has spent the weeks since his appointment spreading disinformation about shootings, transgender people, vaccines, crime, and protests.Yet another reason for me to stay away from both social media and AI.
